Thai Food Lifehack – Rice Cooker Hole Fixer!

Lifehack: Rice Cooker with Hole in It? Fix it!

Recently we went riceless for a few weeks. Apparently, I had burnt a hole in the rice cooker somehow. It’s an aluminum bowl that fits into the electric cooker and it’s fairly thick.

HOW it gets a hole, I’m not sure. But it did. So, being from the USA I figured – gotta get a new rice cooker, right?

Joy says, “We can just get some tape to fix it.”

I said, “HUH? Hon, tape won’t fix this – it’s aluminum and we’d need someone to weld something aluminum to fix the hole. Aluminum is difficult to weld to – exceptionally difficult for some reason and I think we should just throw it out and get a new one.”

Joy was quiet, but she knew inside that there was a way to fix it.

Joy returned the other day from the morning market with a plastic baggie with what looked like some aluminum foil inside and a small piece of… sandpaper.

I said, ‘What’s that?”

She said it was for the rice cooker. I said, “No. Can’t be.”

“Yep!” She said…

Oh my god, I said under my breath. I commenced to sanding the aluminum at the hole. Joy said the sticker goes on the side that faces the heating element, not the side that would touch the rice. I sanded for a minute and cut a small square to fit over the hole.

I pressed it on very hard. It went on so smoothly – like it was MADE for this or something. hahah.

She fired up the rice cooker and made us some great Gwit Diao Gai (Chicken noodle soup).

It WORKED!

So, don’t throw away your rice cookers! If you need some of this stuff – just email us and we’ll send it to you. You’ll have to pick up shipping – but the metal sticker is cheap!

Just let us know!

If you want to buy a rice cooker, we’ve been using this one for a while and love it.

  1. Does this really works, and still working?
I have a hole on the bottom of my rice cooker.
    Thanks
    Paul

  2. Yes it works!!! I am still using it now. 🙂
The problem is we can’t find the metal pot of the same size that fit in my rice cooker…

  3. I just discovered a ruby leak in my aluminum pot. I see that you don’t have the tape any longer. I’m going to be in San Francisco this weekend and am thinking that someone in Chinatown there must sell it. What would I ask for?

    • We don’t even know what it might be called. Aluminum tape? Just tell them you need to fix your pot. Take a photo of the hole with your phone and show the people in a pot shop – they might have something, but more likely they want to sell you another one! 😛

  4. Means many ppl hv faced this prblem. I too have one hole in the bowl which is so tiny that one actually needs to frown to get to see that. Panasonic didn’t do anything even though it was not even 6 months from the date of purchase. It kept lying in their service centre for one year. They didn’t care. Now , i dnt know wt 2 do with it and i also dnt know where to find this kinda foils and how to stick it onto the pan. From India

    • So sorry, this was years ago and we don’t have a source for this tape any longer. I think if you try Amazon they might have someone selling it. Maybe? Sorry, just no idea any more. 😛 Joy

  5. Why is it so difficult to find replacement inner pots! The Teflon is peeling on our Panasonic SR-NA10. So frustrating! Help! 🙂

    • Look on amazon for rice pot fixer, rice pot fix, rice pot foil, rice pot tape. Something like that. Here in Thailand we never even know where we can find it!
